Compton rapper Westside Boogie blends the influence of gospel music with the realities of his upbringing into a deeply personal style rooted in introspection, vulnerability, and street narratives. After building a following in the underground throughout the late 2010s, he signed with Shady Records and released his debut full-length album, Everything’s for Sale, in 2019. His second album, the more confessional More Black Superheroes, followed in 2022. Born Anthony Dixson, he originally performed simply as Boogie, releasing his debut mixtape, Thirst 48, in 2014. The following year brought The Reach and the viral single “Oh My,” produced by Jahlil Beats. As his audience continued to grow, he released his third mixtape, Thirst 48, Pt. 2, in 2016. By the end of the following year, he had a co-sign from Eminem and joined the veteran rapper’s Shady Records. His first output for the label, “Violence” with Masego, arrived that December, followed by a series of singles leading up to his debut LP, Everything’s for Sale, in January 2019. The album featured appearances from JID on “Soho,” 6LACK on “Skydive II,” and Eminem on “Rainy Days.” In 2020, he changed his stage name to Westside Boogie, a nod to where he came from. One of his first releases under the new name was the Joey Bada$$ collaboration “Outside.” He continued to build on his introspective approach through a series of singles and collaborations before releasing his second album, More Black Superheroes, in 2022. The album featured appearances from Snoop Dogg, Soulja Boy, and Shelley FKA DRAM, among others, and included the single “Halfway Right” featuring Rapsody and Alex Isley.
